Does David Nelms have the right stuff?
As CEO of Discover Financial, David Nelms faces what is perhaps the ultimate executive challenge. Discover exists in a bright-future industry but sports a customer base that isn't exactly a demographic dream. So it remains an underdog. In terms of credit card spending, Discover holds a modest 5.6% market share, far behind American Express, MasterCard and Visa. At least one analyst calls it the "Betamax of credit card companies." Ouch! If Nelms can pull Discover Financial into the front ranks somehow, he will have done something truly spectacular.
