Did Marc Dreier get off light?

Bernard Madoff may have been the best thing to happen to Marc Dreier, the New York lawyer who admitted in May to defrauding hedge funds and investors to the tune of $400 million. His arrest was overshadowed, to some extent, by the on-going Madoff circus, as was all of his pre-sentencing drama.

Taking a cue U.S. District Judge Denny Chin's 150 year sentence for Bernard Madoff, prosecutors asked for 145 years for Dreier. But U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff wasn't buying it, according to FINalternatives. "Are you seriously asking for 145?" Rakoff asked prosecutors, who were "seeking just five fewer years for Dreier despite his fraud being only about 1% the size of Madoff's." He added: "Now Mr. Dreier is not going to get any sympathy from this court. But he's no Mr. Madoff." Dreier's frauds "pale in comparison to Mr. Madoff's." He ended up with a 20-year sentence.
