With corporate crime on the rise, a bull market for forensic services firms
The high crimes and subsequent prosecutions on Wall Street have been good news for forensic support firms, which seem to be growing by the day to support all facets of the crime investigation economy.
Consider Stroz Friedberg, which has carved out an interesting niche managing the home detentions of high-profile personalities accused of crimes. The firm managed the in-home detention of Bernard Madoff and has won an assignment to do the same for Dominique Strauss-Kahn, a job that pays $200,000 a month, according to Bloomberg.
The company tailors each job to the person in question. Some might be potential suicide victims, others may be eyeing flight. This is a nice add-on business to its main expertise in corporate investigations, an area in which it has muscled into the market dominated by Kroll and FTI.
An indication of Stroz Friedberg's success came in the form of a $30 million investment from Greenhill & Co. and $115 million from New Mountain Capital, in exchange for 50 percent of the firm. The firm was founded by former law enforcement officials and focused on Internet-related issues before branching out a bit.
We're seeing more such firms crop up. And this represents an issue for law enforcement agencies, including those that focus on financial crimes, which is in a full-blown bull market apparently. TERIS, for example, has announced it has just hired a former special agent for the Secret Service as a consultant. The market is strong and that allows these firms to pay more, enticing many from the law enforcement side.
