Comparing the Yankees to Goldman Sachs
The New York Yankees and Goldman Sachs (GS) have ruled their respective roosts for so long that the comparisons in the wake of the World Series were inevitable. Both have reasserted themselves as of late.
Breakingviews notes they often do business together. The tony investment bank has advised the Yankee on various deals and helped structure pay packages for top players, like Alex Rodriguez. Payout at both firms are the highest in their industries.
But Breakingviews also notes that both have benefited from public programs. Goldman Sachs whether it was forced to or not took TARP money early in the crisis. It benefited from government guarantees of debt and its benefited when the government bailed out AIG, which paid full value on some CDS obligations. The Yankees have sold tax-exempt bonds to build their stadium. There may be a management lesson in all this. When you get down to it success begets success. Both teams pay top dollar for talent, which then continues to tradition.
