Citigroup's overseas focus questioned
Part of Citigroup's main strategy is to tap overseas markets. CEO Vikram Pandit has made this exceedingly clear. But Bloomberg raises an interesting issue: Does the banks zeal to provide credit globally conflict with the government's agenda, which is to stoke domestic credit and liquidity?
Pandit gave a recent speech in which he said the bank was seeking to move "away from credit creation and the U.S. consumer" by "harnessing globalization." This was an unfortunate line from his speech writer and a PR snafu. You have to wonder what the team was thinking? In the end, it may give more fodder to his many critics who do not think he has the executive chops from the domestic, consumer banking perspective to lead the bank. This certainly does nothing to assuage those concerned about the recent executive turmoil.
