Ten years after the fact, Citigroup's historic merger with Travelers remains in the headlines. Instead of hailing the deal however, John Reed--the former CEO of Citigroup who masterminded it--now tells the Financial Times it was a rank failure. Certainly, shareholders never quite benefited the way Reed thought they would. Sandy Weill, on the other hand, maintains the deal was worth it. The 10-year anniversary is being noted by many reporters as a way of highlighting the profound challenge that Vikram Pandit is facing. The individual pieces are tremendous, but no one has yet figured out how to put them together.
