Is Citi getting it?
Citi has announced plans to lend out $36.5 billion of the $45 billion in TARP funds it received. About $26 billion will be used for home mortgages. The rest will be for other consumer-type loans. It would be nice if there were more details attached to this. When will the lending start? Will it be used for new mortgages or existing mortgages?
This does, however, address lawmakers' criticism of banks that have received TARP funds. We'll likely see other banks follow suit. I maintain that lending this money out could be a bit tricky. You certainly don't want to lower standards in a really bad economy. But the government may not accept anything less.
