It's been true for some time now that big hedge funds dominate the industry. They have won the confidence of big institutions, and as long as they can generate returns, they will garner their fair share of inflows. The Financial Times notes a study by software maker PerTrac Financial that found that the top 350 (out of the 15,250) hedge funds now have more than $1 billion in assets, compared with 250 last year. This after a tough year. These finds control more than half the industry's assets, and the trend likely will continue as it keeps getting harder and harder for small hedge funds to launch. That said, the one-person hedge fund shop is a staple that will not soon fade.
