Bernard Madoff media interviews infuriate his victims

Bernard Madoff seems to be on a virtual media tour from prison. First it was the New York Times. And now New York magazine weighs in with a long thumb sucker that retraces his career, his crimes, his implosion and the carnage he left behind. This may be the most incisive attempt so far to journalistically get at the man behind the crime.

Madoff certainly comes across human, from asking his prison psychiatrist if he is a sociopath (her answer was no) to pondering suicide when he heard the news about the death of his son Mark, from feeling remorse over his crimes to feeling his victims should have known what was going on. It's unclear what Madoff wants out of all these interviews, other than to unburden himself.

But all of the interviewing has infuriated his victims, who hold this up as another example of a master manipulator at work. "The man is a monster, a liar, a thief with absolutely no morals, no regrets, no shame. And he portrays his victims as greedy?" one told CNNMoney. "He is psychologically transferring his greed to the victims. He lied through his teeth to the entire world. He bankrupted entire generations of families. He bankrupted charities. It was totally perverted."

You still have to wonder if we'll ever see Madoff in a trial as a witness. Now that would be something. A media circus would no doubt ensue.
