Barofsky in the spotlight
The SigTARP is making waves--that would be Neil Barofsky, the special inspector general for TARP. He is taking his task very seriously and that is making some people in Washington and Wall Street very uncomfortable. He'll be testifying before a Congressional panel on the government's handling of the AIG (AIG) near-disaster.
According to the New York Times, Barofsky will highlight contradictions in the Treasury's public statements about the bailout. For example, the Treasury said "taxpayers will be made whole" on certain investments in AIG, but its own analysis showed Treasury will lose $30 billion.
He's also been critical of the hastily arranged marriage of Merrill Lynch and Bank of America (BAC) and the role of the previous Treasury Secretary. He really wants to the get to the bottom of this, and while uncomfortable for some, you have to applaud his efforts. He is not deterred by power. As an assistant U.S. attorney, he took on Columbian drug lords; he has kept the knife that was used in an attempt on his life as a souvenir.
