Banks court women with family friendly policies
Finally, some good news about the financial sector.
Working Woman magazine has come out with a list of the top 100 companies for working mothers and the list is chock full of financial companies. Bank of America, Citi, JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Capital One, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Northern Trust and PNC all made the list.
"Each year, the Working Mother 100 Best Companies raise the bar on family-friendly benefits. This year is no different: From paid parental leave to backup child care to on-site fitness facilities, these companies are working hard to create a workplace of choice for their nearly 2.5 million employees," according to the magazine.
This may come as something of a surprise, as Wall Street firms do not enjoy a reputation as a female friendly places to work. Recall the Goldman Sachs Mommy Track suit not so long ago. We also noted recently that there are signs that fewer women are seeking careers in financial services for reasons that still need to be explored. But the industry obviously understands that it has a perception problem, and many banks have worked hard to create welcoming work environments.
The list of benefits is pretty impressive. Many make insurance more affordable and require fewer work hours to qualify. Some make on-site child care affordable and easy. Some provide a lot of back up child care for free. Some even run summer camps for children of employees. One bank offers four months of paid level after a birth, not to mention lactation rooms and on-site maternity coaching.
