So what's it like for a local bank to survive the disaster that was Katrina? Short answer: It's not easy. The New York Times, as many of you recall, is taking an ongoing look at the efforts of Liberty Bank and Trust, the largest black-owned bank in New Orleans, and its CEO, Alden McDonald Jr. The story has taken a turn for the worse. Customers are continuing to withdraw whatever savings they have. That has forced the bank to rely on reserve funds. And after an initial burst, the loan business "is down to almost nothing." This is an intriguing series, to say the least.
