Sports sponsorships have been dicey as of late. From all the controversy over bank deals for golf tournaments, Citi's deal with the Mets, and RBS's debacle over its Wimbledon sponsorship, you might think banks would be gun shy. But Bank of America, which has more than any other bank embraced the channel, is stepping up its activity. Forbes notes the bank has sponsorship deals with 10 pro baseball teams, including the Yankees, Dodgers and Red Sox.
It also officially sponsors 23 minor league teams, not to mention Little League. As well as multiple deals with the NFL, Nascar, golf and the Olympics. More than 10% of BofA's checking accounts in the United States are sports branded through teams and leagues. The ROI is compelling, the bank has long argued. It says every dollar spent on such deals returns $10 in revenue and $3 in net income.
