Another way to play the China market

It may seem like the China market is only beckoning the really big banks, the likes of Citigroup and Bank of America. But National City, the Cleveland-based regional powerhouse, is convinced it can become a juggernaut. However, it's not angling to play in the retail banking or investment banking markets. Instead, it has set up a super-consultancy of sorts. It wants to advise middle-market firms that are itching to establish a toehold in the country. By 2012, the bank hopes that the effort will be bringing in seven figures in annual revenue. It wants hundreds of clients by next year. The unit is the creation of Alfred Ho, a vice president who was born in Hong Kong. He may be onto something.
