An Al Capone on Madoff family?
Bernard Madoff has apparently won lots of respect in prison for being a stand up guy; that is, he never cooperated with prosecutors and didn't take people down with him. The people he most wanted to protect were his family--his brother, wife and sons.
Some were convinced they played a role in the epic scam. But prosecutors apparently had trouble tying them to their father's scheme. But it looks now like prosecutors are planning an "Al Capone" on brother Peter and sons Andrew and Mark, in the words of FINalternatives. They are planning to go after them for tax evasion.
The speculation is that former accountant David Friehling, who is cooperating with investigators, has played a key role in all of this. Madoff's sons continue to voice their innocence. Neither has visited him in prison, where their father is serving a 150-year sentence. But the vise seems to clamping down. Recall that Irving Picard is going after them aggressively as well, charging them with using the Madoff firm as a piggy bank.
