Managed Portfolio and Core Advantage Portfolio Mirror Investment Strategy Available to Stadion’s High Net-Worth Investors for Past 15 Years

WATKINSVILLE, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Stadion Money Management (www.stadionmoney.com), an investment manager that aims to capture most of the market's good times and miss most of its bad times, announced that its Managed Portfolio and Core Advantage Portfolio mutual funds have reached their five-year milestone. The funds, launched September 15, 2006, invest primarily in exchange-traded funds (ETFS) and are actively managed by Stadion’s investment team with the goal of capturing market updrafts and circumventing market downturns.

Both funds have the ability to go to an all cash portfolio when Stadion’s models indicate that the market is exceedingly risky. Conversely, both funds can be fully invested in equity positions when the model indicates that the probability of loss is low.

“The mindset of financial advisors and their clients has undergone a dramatic shift over the past several years,” said Jud Doherty, President of Stadion Money Management. “’Build my wealth’ has now been supplanted by ‘preserve my wealth.’ We’re living in a time where good is defined by the absence of bad, and by no small coincidence, that’s the way Stadion’s investment strategy is designed to operate across all of our investment vehicles. Our overriding mission is to give our clients dignified retirements by employing a process that minimizes risk by reducing exposure.”

The investment objective of the more conservative $1.1 billion Managed Portfolio (ETFFX – Class A shares) is to seek long-term capital appreciation, while maintaining a secondary emphasis on capital preservation. Key features of this fund include:

  • 100% tactical, employs proprietary short/intermediate-term measures
  • ETF screening is stringent
  • Focus includes conservative ETFs (e.g., broad market and minimal sector/region ETFs)
  • Low volatility
  • Sell discipline is stringent
  • More likely than the Core Advantage Portfolio to be fully invested in cash

The less conservative $56.5 million Core Advantage Portfolio (ETFRX – Class A shares) seeks capital appreciation primarily by investing in ETFs. Key features of this fund include:

  • 100% tactical, employs proprietary short/intermediate/long-term measures
  • Normally 50% of the Fund’s portfolio will be invested in broad-based equity ETFs or fixed income markets ETFs
  • ETF screening is more flexible vs. the Managed Portfolio
  • May expand beyond conservative ETFs to sector ETFs
  • Sell discipline is flexible
  • Moderate volatility
  • Less likely than the Managed Portfolio to be fully invested in cash

Both funds are managed by a team consisting of Tim Chapman, Jud Doherty, Greg Morris, and Brad Thompson.

Stadion’s asset allocation process is guided by a proprietary, technically-driven model that determines a weighted average score for market risk based on a combination of factors, including market breadth, trend determination, sector analysis, and relative strength/performance. Based on its allocation model, Stadion evaluates the risk levels for different markets and market sectors, then participates in markets with low risk scores and divests its investments in those markets that score high on the risk scale. When a fund is not in a defensive position, its portfolio will typically contain 10-15 holdings.
