Russell Global Index to Gain 90 IPOs
U.S. broad-market Russell 3000 Index accounts for 23 of global total
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Russell Investments plans to add 90 initial public offerings (IPOs) to the Russell Global Index for the third quarter of 2011 on September 30, including 23 additions to the U.S. broad-market Russell 3000® Index, in accordance with the firm’s systematic quarterly process.
Of the 67 IPOs added to the Russell Global ex-U.S. Index, 13 will be added to the Russell Greater China Index (China, Hong Kong and Taiwan) and 10 will join the Russell Europe Index, while the Russell Brazil Index gains four IPOs and the Russell Russia Index gains three IPOs.
In the U.S., 25 IPOs will be added this quarter, including four to the large-cap Russell 1000® Index, 19 into the small-cap Russell 2000® Index and two into the Russell Microcap® Index. Overall, this equals three more IPOs (22) than were added in U.S. in the second quarter of 2011 and seven less than the 18 IPOs added in the first quarter of 2011. The 90 IPOs added globally on September 30, 2011 will exceed the total of 77 added to the Russell Global Index in the third quarter of 2010 by 13.
Some of the key U.S. IPO additions to the Russell 3000® Index for this quarter include; Dunkin’ Brands Group, Inc. (DNKN), HomeAway, Inc. (AWAY), Pandora Media, Inc. (P) and Zillow,Inc. (Z).
"Our quarterly process to identify and add eligible IPOs worldwide is designed to ensure Russell Indexes systematically mirror current market conditions," said Rolf Agather, managing director of index research and innovation. "It's a key component of our index methodology, which aims to consistently provide investors with comprehensive benchmarks that reflect the global equity market with minimal cost turnover."
Inclusion in the various Russell Indexes is determined by market capitalization. Russell weights members of each index by float-adjusted market capitalization and explicitly excludes “locked-up” shares from IPO weights. As IPOs are added each quarter, Russell does not delete existing members to make room, but fully reconstitutes each index annually at the end of the second quarter.
