CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Northern Trust (Nasdaq: NTRS), a leading provider of financial services for individuals, families and institutions, announced today that Suzanne Shier has been named Tax Strategist for Personal Financial Services. In this role, Shier will write, speak, and provide thought leadership on federal tax issues of interest to the firm’s clients, with a special emphasis on charitable giving, trust law and tax legislation.

Shier, a 26-year veteran in estate planning, tax law and fiduciary administration, was a partner at Chapman and Cutler LLP where she led the firm’s Trusts and Estates Practice Group, representing individuals, charitable organizations, and corporate fiduciaries in a full range of estate planning and fiduciary administration matters.

Shier has earned numerous honors, including recognition as a Leading Estate Planning Attorney by Leading Lawyers Network. Super Lawyers magazine named her an “Illinois Super Lawyer” from 2009 to 2011. She is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and is an adjunct professor in the Master of Laws in Taxation Program at Northwestern University Law School.

In the Chicago civic community, Shier serves on the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of Gads Hill Center, the Chicago Coalition of Women’s Initiatives in Law and as Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Chicago Scholars.

Shier earned her bachelor’s degree with distinction in economics and sociology from the University of Michigan. She has a law degree, cum laude, from the Loyola University Chicago School of Law and a master of laws in taxation from the DePaul University College of Law.
