Castle Hall Alternatives and Orchard Harbour Publish Guide to Operational Due Diligence in Asia
MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In response to the growth of the hedge fund industry in Asia, Castle Hall Alternatives and Orchard Harbour today published a new white paper to guide investors during their conduct of operational due diligence on Asian hedge funds. Castle Hall and Orchard Harbour announced, earlier in 2011, a strategic partnership to offer global investors independent, expert due diligence when evaluating hedge funds across the Asia Pacific region.
The paper considers a variety of issues relevant to allocators who already have investments in Asian managers, or who are considering new allocations. Topics covered include legal and regulatory issues, regional tax considerations and best practices over management and operations for Asian fund managers. The paper also highlights some of the region specific issues investors should consider when conducting due diligence on administrators and other service providers in Asia.
Chris Addy, Castle Hall’s CEO, commented, “Investing in Asian hedge funds presents a number of challenges. For North American and European investors, distance is an obvious impediment, which makes Asian funds harder – and much more expensive – to diligence than managers in New York and London. Managers are generally smaller with fewer assets and fewer employees, investors must consider local tax and regulatory issues, and service providers may be region or country specific. All these factors impact the due diligence process.”
Alex Wise, Managing Director of Orchard Harbour, said, “We believe effective due diligence requires the knowledge and information advantage that comes from regional specialism. A generic due diligence checklist can easily miss issues if the due diligence process does not take account of the unique characteristics of the Asian marketplace. More practically, regional presence can significantly reduce the cost and enhance the timeliness of the due diligence process.”
