Tiger Management LLC. Names John Townsend Managing Partner, Chief Operating Officer
Alex Robertson Named Managing Partner
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Julian Robertson, chairman of Tiger Management, LLC, announced today that former Goldman Sachs executive John Townsend will become a managing partner and succeed Dr. Aaron Stern as Tiger’s chief operating officer, and that Alex Robertson will become a managing partner.
Both managing partners will work with Julian Robertson to manage the Tiger funds and provide leadership and management for the Tiger seeds.
Dr. Stern will continue working at Tiger in a senior advisor role.

John Townsend
John Townsend was born and raised in Lumberton, NC. He attended Episcopal High School and the University of North Carolina, from which he graduated with Honors and degrees in English Literature and American History. Following three years as a farmer, he returned to UNC where he received his MBA with Highest Honors in 1982.
He began his investment banking career at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette where he served from 1982 – 1987 before joining Goldman, Sachs & Co. Over the course of his career at Goldman Sachs, John was a general partner and managing director and held a variety of responsibilities, including head of the South Region, co-head of Leveraged Finance and member of the Firm’s Commitments Committee. He retired as an advisory director in 2002.
Since that time, Mr. Townsend has been involved in a variety of investing activities on behalf of himself and others. He currently serves as senior advisor to Stone Point Capital. He serves as a member of The Riverstone Group, and is a director of International Paper Co. where he chairs the Audit and Finance Committee and Belk, Inc., where he chairs the Nominations Committee.
In addition to his business activities, Mr. Townsend serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina as well as the Executive Committee of the UNC Endowment. He also serves as chairman of the Board of Episcopal High School, as a member of the investment committee of the Smith Richardson Foundation, as a member of the Investment Committee of the Virginia Theological Seminary, as vice chair of Greenwich Hospital, and is a trustee of the Grand Teton National Park Foundation and the US Ski and Snowboard Team.
Alex Robertson
Alex Robertson graduated from the University of North Carolina in 2001, and received a Master of Business Administration from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business in 2008. He joined Tiger in November 2008, serving on the Management Committee; responsible for the development of emerging managers within the organization, strategic business development, and defining the Tiger brand reflected in its seeds.
